our team

We take immense pride in the education and experience of our staff and their ability to help our members and clients. You won’t find a more knowledgeable, passionate, driven, ELITE team of fitness professionals on the Central Coast.

ryan joiner MS, CSCS, Owner/Founder

Ryan is openly endorsed as the “go to fitness expert” in San Luis Obispo County. He has been sought after to present his innovative fitness, wellness, and rehabilitation topics to many large organizations in San Luis Obispo County, like PG&E, Morris & Garritano, The Family Care Network, French Hospital, Cal Trans, The Department of Social Services, Exchange Club, Rotary Club and Kiwana’s.

Ryan’s client list reads as a “Who’s-Who” of leading local as well as professional athletes, leading business professionals, and good ol’ “regular Joe’s” (like he claims to be himself). And since starting his career in 1996 and launching Athlon in 2003 one could easily say that Ryan’s fitness and performance services has improved the lives of literally thousands of San Luis Obispo County residents.

Ryan started Athlon because it was the obvious progression of his passion to help people look, feel, and perform at their best. A black-belt in Karate, he competed as a kickboxer achieving a ranking of #3 in North America by the International Kickboxing Federation. He’s always loved competing and maintaining optimum fitness levels and loves helping others achieve their “elite” self too.

He was raised on a farm here in California where the hard physical labor made him strong and athletic, and the typically long, farmer-life days developed his “hard-headed” work ethic. He is a “never-say-die” kind of person and you’ll often find him working hard here at Athlon (either in the facility with a client or construction project, or in his office researching new fitness programs). He endeavors to be an innovator in the fitness and performance industry and make an impact on the lives of San Luis Obispo County residents.  Bottom line: he’s helped thousands of people improve their lives through better fitness and performance – and he can help you too.

Cory Johnston MS, CSCS, RKC II, USAW, Pn2

Hailing from the college party town of Chico, California, Cory decided to attend Cal Poly and major in Nutrition, especially its effects on sports performance. Cory was a baseball player all of his youth and through High School. He always had a strong determination to be in the best shape for the start of each baseball season which ultimately sparked his interest in sport specific conditioning and nutrition.

During his time at Cal Poly he worked as an Exercise Room Assistant at the Cal Poly Rec Center and loved the various types of people he would come across in that fitness setting, (young athletes to retired faculty). Cory enjoys following the sport of bodybuilding and fitness contests and wrote his senior project on Creatine Supplementation and Athletic Performance.

He loves helping people reach their goals and being a positive influence in their life. He also likes staying active and playing softball to scratch that baseball itch. Cory believes in hard work and a consistent nutrition program to get fitness results and he’s ready to help people achieve that.

Angela Johnston BS, ACSM CPT, PN1

Angela grew up loving the sun and the sand in Ventura County, CA. Her interest in an active lifestyle began at an early age when, due to excess energy as a child, she was enrolled in gymnastics and progressed through the competitive levels for nine years. It was after this sport career (& the injuries that came with it) that she became interested in the world of personal training, athletic training and physical therapy & found her way into Cal Poly.

She thrived in the Kinesiology program and truly developed a love for all things exercise and movement related. She concurrently did internships in both the strength and conditioning room for Cal Poly athletics and here at Athlon Elite. Guess which one she liked best… She graduated with her bachelors in Kinesiology and a minor in Sports Nutrition in 2011 and quickly began moving up the ranks here at Athlon, eventually becoming an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and a Senior Trainer here at Athlon.

Angela is the “jack of all trades” here at Athlon. On any given day you’ll see her training clients, answering phones, and giving sales tours! She loves creating new and exciting ways to make exercise fun, and likes to think of her enthusiasm for fitness as contagious. She is incredibly curious of peoples’ likes and dislikes inside and outside of the gym and strives to be friendly and approachable. So if you spot her in the gym, feel free to seek her out for any sort of exercise advice, nutritional counseling or just a good old fashion chit chat!

Andy Sverchek MS, CSCS

Andy is a San Luis Obispo native and was a dual sport athlete in Football and Track and Field at SLO High School. His career in both sports continued at Cal Poly, where he also earned a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biology.  Andy finished his collegiate career as a 4-year starter at defensive end for the football team. He also finished as a school record holder in both the shot put and the discus, earning All-American status and 9th place finish in the shot put at the NCAA Championships in 1999.

After graduating from Cal Poly in 2000, Andy’s passion for sports and helping others led him to a career in personal training in Los Angeles. While there, he took up cycling and triathlon training, eventually competing in both half and full Ironman distance triathlons (Wildflower Half Ironman 2006 + 2011, Ironman New Zealand 2007).

In 2009, he returned to Cal Poly to pursue a Masters degree in Kinesiology and to coach collegiate athletes. He worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach in the Cal Poly weight room as well as an assistant coach for the track and field team for 6 years. He also spent 6 years coaching football at Mission Prep High School.

Andy has a passion for coaching human athletic movement and enjoys seeing his athletes achieve their goals. He has a diverse background as a competitor and coach in multiple sports, including football, track and field, cycling, triathlons, and backcountry skiing. He believes in educating his clients on how to train effectively and safely so that they have the physical tools for a lifetime of health and performance.

Jasmine Pickett BS, CSCS

Jasmine was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Urbana, Ohio. Sports and fitness have been a part of her life from a very young age. At the age of two, her mother placed her in gymnastics after observing her doing a perfect cartwheel to pick up her toys. Jasmine pursued a  gymnastics career for over fourteen years competing all over the country.

Along with gymnastics, Jasmine was also very active in the sport of track and field. During her sophomore year of high school, she decided to make track and field her sport of choice and retired her gymnastics leotard. Jasmine competed as a long jumper/triple jumper and sprinter while in high school. During her high school career, she became the long jump state champion as well as the school record holder in the long jump. Her senior year she was approached by Cal Poly’s track and field program. Jasmine received a full scholarship to Cal Poly in 2007 where she competed on its division 1 track and field team. She earned the title of 2-time All-American in the triple jump throughout her time at Cal Poly. Jasmine has continued pursuing her triple jump career as a post collegiate athlete.  She currently trains with her previous college coach in hopes of competing in the 2016 summer Olympic games as an American triple jumper in Brazil.

During her time at Cal Poly, Jasmine majored in Kinesiology. She loved the kinesiology department and was able to relate so much of what she learned in the class room to her everyday life, especially her athletic side.  She planned to go to Physician Assistant school after graduating Cal Poly, however, after working in a physical therapy clinic for a while her plans changed. It was there in the physical therapy environment that Jasmine found a love for physical therapy and personal training. The idea of taking an individual who was injured or had been injured and providing them with an exercise program that allowed them to get back to their activity of choice really resignated with her. She became certified as a strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association in hopes of training individuals using many of the injury prevention and rehabilitation methods in physical therapy.

In 2016, Jasmine became a member of the Athlon Elite personal training family. Jasmine is very excited to be a part of the Athlon team. She looks forward to working with her clients each day and helping them reach the goals they have set for themselves. Jasmine strives to get to know every person she trains and works hard to create an atmosphere where each individual feels safe and encouraged. When Jasmine isn’t training at Athlon, she loves to spend her time writing and playing music and of course riding her unicycle! Ask her about the “power of the one wheel”!

mike peevler BS, CSCS

Mike was born in Walnut Creek, CA, but spent the majority of his childhood in Beijing, China where he attended the International School of Beijing (ISB). Mike’s athletic potential was evident early on when he won ISB’s annual Terry Fox Run (10 years in a row)!  By high school Mike was a multi-sport varsity competitor in Track, Soccer, and Swimming, (and team captain of both the Soccer and Swimming teams).

After graduating ISB, Mike moved back to the East Bay where he attended Diablo Valley College and competed in both Track as an 800M sprinter, and Swimming in the 50m free, 100 fly, and 200 IM.  Unfortunately, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome put an end to Mike’s athletic career, but it inspired him to focus his education on exercise science to learn more about the human body and help others achieve their peak fitness potential.

He transferred to Cal Poly in 2012 to complete a degree in Kinesiology.  As he worked toward that degree he started his personal training career at the Cal Poly Rec Center helping students and faculty reach their fitness goals.  Soon after graduating Cal Poly he completed Athlon’s internship program to continue honing his craft and developing his career.  We quickly recognized Mike’s skills and potential and hired him to continue adding to Athlon’s reputation as having a highly educated and experienced coaching team, capable of working with clients from all walks of life...

In his spare time Mike (of course) likes to perform extra credit sets and reps ;-), as well as play soccer and swim.

Kathy Horlings

Kathy has been helping Athlon run efficiently since 2010.  She brings many years of business experience as well as a love of fitness and nutrition to Athlon, (and the ability to get sh@# done!…) Shortly after moving to Paso Robles to start a new business with her husband, Kathy became a Private Training client at Athlon. When the position for an Administrative Assistant became available Kathy immediately applied.

Athlon was exactly what she was looking for in a company: a positive environment, an opportunity to help people reach their goals, and the ability to have a flexible schedule to do what she loves best… travel! Since then she has taken over Athlon’s Member Services Department as well as accounting and human resources. She’s a great leader and an invaluable asset to the team Athlon and it’s members.

When Kathy is not planning her next getaway vacation she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, hiking the local trails, wine tasting, and playing pickleball. Kathy also fulfills her passion for fitness and nutrition by staying up to date on the most current research trends. She looks forward to not only reaching her personal best at Athlon but also being an integral part of Athlon’s future growth.
