Meet the Team

Meet the Athlon Fitness & Performance Team

We take immense pride in the education and experience of our staff and their ability to help our members and clients.  You won’t find a more knowledgeable, passionate, driven, ELITE  team of fitness professionals on the Central Coast.

Ryan Joiner, MS, CSCS – Owner/Founder

Ryan is openly endorsed as the “go to fitness expert” in San Luis Obispo County. He has been sought after to present his innovative fitness, wellness and rehabilitation topics to many large organizations in San Luis County, like PG&E, Morris & Garritano, The Family Care Network, French Hospital, Cal Trans, The Department of Social Services, Exchange Club, Rotary Club and Kiwana’s just to name a few.

Ryan’s client list reads like a “Who’s-Who” list of leading local as well as professional athletes, leading business professionals, and good ol’ “regular Joe’s” (like he claims to be himself). And since launching Athlon in 2003 one could easily say that Ryan’s fitness and performance services and advice has improved the lives of literally thousands of San Luis County residents as well as other out-of-state (and out-of-country) residents that regularly seek out his informative reports that are offered for FREE on this website.

Ryan started Athlon because it was the obvious progression of his passion. A black-belt in Shotokan Karate, he competed as a kickboxer achieving a ranking of #3 in North America by the International Kickboxing Federation. He’s always loved competing and maintaining optimum fitness levels and loves helping others achieve their “elite” self too.

Ryan was raised on a farm here in California where the hard physical labor made him strong and athletic, and the typically long, farmer-life days developed his “hard-headed” work ethic. He is a “never-say-die” kind of person and you’ll often find him working hard here at Athlon (either in the facility with a client or construction project, or in his office researching new fitness programs).

After high school he attended Cuesta College and got his AA and AS in general studies, then went to Fresno State for his Bachelors in exercise physiology. After that he came back to SLO and obtained a Master’s degree from Cal Poly in Kinesiology with an emphasis in biomechanics and motor behavior. Ryan maintains the four highest fitness certifications in the industry: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Certified Health Fitness Specialist from the American College of Sports Medicine, Movement Integration and Performance Specialist from Z-Health Performance Solutions, and Club Coach Olympic lifting certification from USA Weightlifting.

Ryan endeavors to be an innovator in the fitness industry and more importantly make a significant impact on the fitness and performance, and thus FreeConsult140x250lives, of our local San Luis Obispo County residents. Bottom line: he’s helped thousands of people improve their lives through achieving their own “elite” fitness – and he can help you too.

Angela Martin, BS, ACSM-CPT

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA 2011
Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Minor in Sports Nutrition

American College of Sports Medicine
Certified Personal Trainer

Personal Profile:
Angela grew up loving the sun and the sand in Ventura County, CA. Her interest in an active lifestyle began at an early age when, due to excess energy as a child, she was enrolled in gymnastics and progressed through the competitive levels for nine years. It was after this sport career (and the injuries that came with it) that she became interested in the world of personal training, athletic training and physical therapy and found her way into Cal Poly.

She thrived in the Kinesiology program and truly developed a love for all things exercise and movement related. She concurrently did internships in both the strength and conditioning room for Cal Poly athletics and here at Athlon Elite. Guess which one she liked best… She graduated with her bachelors in Kinesiology and a minor in Sports Nutrition in 2011 and quickly began moving up the ranks here at Athlon, eventually becoming an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and a Senior Trainer here at Athlon.

Angela is the “jack of all trades” here at Athlon. On any given day you’ll see her training clients, answering phones, and giving sales tours! She loves creating new and exciting ways to make exercise fun, and likes to think of her enthusiasm for fitness as contagious. She is incredibly curious of peoples’ likes and dislikes inside and outside of the gym and strives to be friendly and approachable. So if you spot her in the gym, feel free to seek her out for any sort of exercise advice, nutritional counseling or just a good old fashion chit chat!

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA 2000
Bachelors of Science in Biology

National Strength and Conditioning Association
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist

USA Weightlifting
Level 1 Sports Performance Coach

CrossFit Level-1 Trainer

Personal Profile:
Andy was born in San Luis Obispo and was a SLO High School dual sport athlete in Football and Track and Field. His athletic career in both sports continued at Cal Poly, where he earned his Bachelors degree in Biology. Andy finished his collegiate career as a 4-year starter on the football team and the 3rd best defensive end to ever play at Cal Poly (his dad and uncle being the top two). He also finished as a school record holder in both the shot put and the discus, earning All-American status in the shot put at the NCAA Championships in 1999.

After graduating from Cal Poly in 2000, Andy’s passion for sports and helping others led him to a career in personal training in Beverly Hills, where he worked with some of the best trainers in Los Angeles. Here Andy also took up cycling and triathlon training, eventually competing in both half and full Ironman distance triathlons (Wildflower Half Ironman 2006 + 2011, Ironman New Zealand 2007).

In 2009, he returned to Cal Poly to pursue a Masters degree in Kinesiology and to coach collegiate athletes. Since 2010, he has worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach in the Cal Poly weight room as well as an assistant coach for the track and field team. Jasmine Pickett, BS, CSCS

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo CA 2012
Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology

National Strength and Conditioning Association
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist

Personal Profile:

Jasmine was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Urbana, Ohio. Sports and fitness have been a part of her life from a very young age. At the age of two, her mother placed her in gymnastics after observing her doing a perfect cartwheel to pick up her toys. Jasmine pursued a  gymnastics career for over fourteen years competing all over the country. Along with gymnastics, Jasmine was also very active in the sport of track and field. During her sophomore year of high school, she decided to make track and field her sport of choice and retired her gymnastics leotard. Jasmine competed as a long jumper/triple jumper and sprinter while in high school. During her high school career, she became the long jump state champion as well as the school record holder in the long jump. Her senior year she was approached by Cal Poly’s track and field program. Jasmine received a full scholarship to Cal Poly in 2007 where she competed on its division 1 track and field team. She earned the title of 2-time All-American in the triple jump throughout her time at Cal Poly. Jasmine has continued pursuing her triple jump career as a post collegiate athlete.  She currently trains with her previous college coach in hopes of competing in the 2016 summer Olympic games as an American triple jumper in Brazil.

During her time at Cal Poly, Jasmine majored in Kinesiology. She loved the kinesiology department and was able to relate so much of what she learned in the class room to her everyday life, especially her athletic side.  She planned to go to Physician Assistant school after graduating Cal Poly, however, after working in a physical therapy clinic for a while her plans changed. It was there in the physical therapy environment that Jasmine found a love for physical therapy and personal training. The idea of taking an individual who was injured or had been injured and providing them with an exercise program that allowed them to get back to their activity of choice really resignated with her. She became certified as a strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association in hopes of training individuals using many of the injury prevention and rehabilitation methods in physical therapy.

In 2016, Jasmine became a member of the Athlon Elite personal training family. Jasmine is very excited to be a part of the Athlon team. She looks forward to working with her clients each day and helping them reach the goals they have set for themselves. Jasmine strives to get to know every person she trains and works hard to create an atmosphere where each individual feels safe and encouraged.

When Jasmine isn’t training at Athlon, she loves to spend her time writing and playing music and of course riding her unicycle! Ask her about the “power of the one wheel”!
